I loved living in Costa Rica and most of the time I could ignore the things I missed while I was living there. But then I left! And I am in Europe… and hmm I keep saying OHHH I missed this! So here is the short list…
1- Hot showers on a cold day! Not much beats getting in a hot steamy shower when you are chilly. It just feels so good to be wrapped up in the heat and steam.
2- Cool days! I knew I didn’t always love the heat, but I didn’t remember how much I loved putting on a jean jacket and long pants and going out for the evening. Seriously! It’s been in the high-60s low- 70s this week in Berlin and I am loving every minute of it!
3- Food/Restaurant Variety! I mean in a small town there are only so many places to eat and only so many types of food. And Costa Rica is not exactly known for its culinary feats. (Though I do miss Gallo Pinto.)
4- Coffee Houses! Here in Berlin (and back in MPLS and even in upstate NY now a days) there is a new coffee shop on every corner. I can pop in for a pretty AND delicious latte and break open my laptop, spend hours listening to cool music, soaking up the energy of the other people, and getting work done… Score!
5- Shopping. Or not shopping! I like that I have a choice. To shop or not to shop. I don’t even particularly like shopping, so I never realized I missed it… and it’s not really so much the shopping, as it is the ability to choose to shop. If I do just want to browse for a new skirt to wear on a date, I can! If I think I need a new pair os walking shoes, I can just go look for a pair. Freedom!
6- Make up and hair products! Almost nothing makes me happier than a trip to Sephora or Mac or a store that has pretty make-up and shiny tubes of colors for me to look at and buy! And the hair colors I had in CR, I had to bring there with me, there was nothing like that near where I lived. (Maybe this falls under shopping but to me, make-up and hair/skin care is a whole new level!)
7- Day time strolling! Seriously to walk outside my house in the middle of the day and go for a walk. No equatorial noonday sun to content with, no sunblock, no sweat pouring off your body, matting down your hair… just a simple walk in the fresh sunshine (even when it’s warm- it’s no longer equator sun!) It’s nice not to have to plan my errands around when it will be the hottest, and just go when I need to.
Don’t get me wrong… I loved living in Costa Rica. I just loved being there so much, I didn’t realize how much I missed a few of these other things. 🙂
What do you miss when you are not “home”?
