One Year Recap!

Medellin Sunset

Wow Wow Wow! I can hardly believe it has been a year- and I am back in the same city it all started- Medellin, Colombia. (My second favorite city in the world!) It is actually very refreshing to be in a city where I actually understand the language and mostly understand the culture! Kind of a relaxing break!

I have another post started with some of the “Things I Have Learned” – but I thought I would just kind of do a “stream of consciousness” post with the highlights… so Ready, Set, Go!

******************************************************

This year I realized that I could fall in love with a city (Medellin)! I even decided I would move here sometime in the next year or so, and then… I landed in Berlin and all bets were off! Berlin is now my favorite city in the world! I rediscovered a lot of who I am there- plus I have family history from Berlin ad Saxony- I think I can “feel” that connection there somehow.

**********

From March 2016 to March 2017 I visited and/or lived-in 27 different countries. (See the About Me page for the complete list.) I can hardly believe what an amazing adventure I had.  I have been in all of the continents  except Antartica! (I think I feel a new tattoo coming on!)

**********

I realized even though I hate the heat, I fall in love with hot and tropical countries, beaches hold a special place in my heart.

**********

I really did not like Asia that much. Even though I spent about 8 months in Asia and Southeast Asia. I think I will always prefer South and Central America to Asia. My two favorite places in Asia/Southeast Asia were Siem Reap, Cambodia and Penang, Georgetown Malaysia.

**********

I learned to say hello, goodbye, please, and thank you in at least 15 languages (but please don’t ask me to remember all of them now!)

**********

I took a cruise across the Atlantic Ocean (Cartagena, Colombia to Lisbon, Spain) and an Overland truck through all of Southern Africa (Zambia to South Africa.)

**********

I met my best friend in Europe and we hung out in Portugal and Spain! Gotta LOVE LOVE LOVE when home comes to you!

**********

I went on dates in almost every country, at least once. Meeting (or dating) people in these locations is one of the best ways I know of seeing the city/country like a local! I fell in love at least twice, once moving from Thailand to Malaysia to be with the man in question.

**********

I  know that when I am uncomfortable, that I will survive and that I can do it anyway. Kind of didn’t have a lot of choice sometimes.  To live or travel in a foreign country is to be uncomfortable- A LOT! But to “Just Do It” anyway- takes more guts than most of us give ourselves credit for.

**********

I learned to be brave enough to check out a food stand even when I don’t know the language- and to enjoy the variety of street foods around the word.

**********

I became a photographer again! This makes my heart so happy! I don’t carry my “big” camera anymore- I use my iPhone and take “street” and travel photographs- but I find so much freedom in just being in the moment and enjoying the style of photography- heck just enjoying photography again… my heart is so full of this creative energy again!

**********

I learned how to live in the moment. And even though I am a photographer again, I don’t have to take pictures of everything, and I don’t even have to be on my phone all the time. I like keeping my phone in my bag and just enjoying the sites and the people around me. So many evenings sitting with friends watching amazing sunsets, talking around the table of good food and wine… and no social media or telephones needed!

**********

That’s my Papa!

I discovered that when I walk without anything in my hands, I rub the top of my thumb nails with my forefingers. (Just like I used to rub my Papa’s thumbnails and suck my thumb… well minus the thumb sucking!)

**********

I climbed one of the highest sand dunes in the world. I slept in a tent for a month! Camped where there were no showers and sometimes not even bathrooms! Had dinner in a cave, and afterwards enjoyed an amazing time singing with the gang to the beautiful sounds of a friend playing guitar.

**********

I slept on top of an Overland truck. Under the full moon- in the dessert- in Namibia- more than once! The stars were so bright! It was amazing to see the Milky Way from that viewpoint! The moon was so bright, it was hard to sleep. One morning as the sun rose- the moon glowed so red as it set. I was thankful to wake up to see it. And as I lay there- the stars started falling! INCREDIBLE!!

**********

I saw one of the huge structures for Afrika Burning being built and spent the night in the Tankwa Karoo desert with a bunch of incredible hippie human beings who shared their tents and life with us for that short time.

**********

I fell in love with people. All kinds of people. People are beautiful. People are ugly. People are the same. People are so different. It’s our souls. It’s our humanity.   Everyone loves to share their lives with other people, and if you just ask questions, be interested, learn to listen…. you will discover so many things about them… and more about yourself!

**********

Some people are in your life forever, some for a short time. I met so many amazing people, and meeting them over and over in different countries was one of the highlights. Knowing that I could have a deep connection and “keep them” or that there were some people with whom I was going to have a  shallow “just in time” connection… and knowing that either was going to be amazing was a helpful thing!

********************************************

Funny- every day I have these conversations in my head- things I have learned, things I want to say- and now I can’t remember them. But I will try to start writing short posts that get some of it out here… 🙂 And I am still working on the “formal” things I learned traveling… post. 🙂

How has travel changed you? What has it done for you in your life?
